  20. the official release of DaisyDrop Version 1.0.
  21.  
  22. DaisyDrop is an new style of Software to hook different kinds of
  23. GUI and non-GUI applications together without expensive recoding.  It
  24. ties the heritage of UNIX to the NEXTSTEP GUI in ways which generalize
  25. the desktop.  It makes it easy to use the strengths of different
  26. programs and to integrate legacy systems into the NEXTSTEP GUI.
  27. Daisy Drop is software with a new idea for productivity enhancement
  28. for Power Users, Developers and System Administrators, as well as
  29. for people designing desktops for users.

  31. DaisyDrop solves the problems of GUI programs using non-GUI programs and
  32. vice versa. Ever since Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) have come on the
  33. market, the computing community has struggled hooking the command line style
  34. of command execution into the GUI.  The problem is two-fold: first,
  35. incrementally adding GUI to our old (and new) command line tools
  36. and applications (we usually just wrap it in a window). Second, providing
  37. the facilities provided by the command line tools to the GUI
  38. Applications (except through dumping to a file, etc.).  DaisyDrop solves
  39. both of these problems for the NEXTSTEP environment and provides additional
  40. benefits along the way.

  42. DaisyDrop provides, first, a framework to organize all tools that can be
  43. started from the command line (typical UNIX tools as well as graphical tools
  44. -- over 500 are already loaded in the default configuration) and facilitate
  45. the execution of any of them from the Desktop.  It organizes these tools for
  46. easy use and provides the framework to DaisyChain them together.  These
  47. DaisyChains are then available as Named and Unnamed NEXTSTEP Services and as
  48. separate DropZones on the NEXTSTEP Desktop. You may push or drop files on
  49. these DropZones to execute the DaisyChains.  The DropZones extend the Dock
  50. and the Desktop in a fully free-form method, whereby any arguments may be
  51. chosen, and any program may be run.

  53. The second main feature set is the group of Helpers -- tools called from the
  54. command line of shell scripts to interact with the user and with the
  55. NEXTSTEP environment.  There are 10 different Helpers -- providing a variety
  56. of features (e.g., giving information to the user, asking questions of the
  57. user, and synchronizing different command execution streams).

  59. The third main feature is the set of tools and examples included (over 500).

  71.           DoTerm Helper provide methods to run programs in windows,
  72.           RadioButtons Helper requests alternatives from the user,
  73.           Slider Helper requests a specific number from the user, and
  74.           YesOrNo Helper informs the user and asks the user questions
  75.     Ties GUI to executables in 10 modes:
  76.           Drop and Push on Garden Editor,
  77.           Drop and Push on DropZones,
  78.           Unnamed Service Pipe, Source and Sink,
  79.           Named Service Pipe, Source and  Sink
  80.     Executables are 3.2 MAB for NeXT Motorola and Intel platforms.
  81.     Over 500 tools already accessible in the Default Garden.
